Today (20 May 2016), over 12 thousand company employees across the UK are getting out into their communities volunteering their time to help community groups, schools and local charities. They will be taking part in Give & Gain Day, the only global day of employee volunteering, organised by Business in the Community.

Give & Gain Day is a global celebration of the power and potential of employee volunteering. It sees thousands of people across the globe spend a working day volunteering for good causes in their local community.

Over 240 companies are helping hundreds of community organisations in the UK this year. In total, the time donated by business volunteers across the UK on Give & Gain Day will be 73,540 hours – an invaluable investment for communities. Projects involve everything from introducing school kids to sports and promoting healthy lifestyle, to employability workshops with the long term unemployed, and revitalising a community garden. The initiative aims to encourage and challenge many more businesses to invest time in their communities.

adi Apprentices will be volunteering at Birmingham's ThinkTank Science Museum to reviltalize the Science Garden in preparation for the upcoming busy summer period.  The Science Garden is an outdoor discovery space packed with surprises and fun activities for the whole family. It offers an adventurous and entertaining day out, bringing themes of engineering, mechanics and transportation to life through over 30 hands-on exhibits.

In addition to benefiting visitors to the museum, through volunteering on Give & Gain Day, adi Apprentices will also gain and develop their skills in; project management, leadership, problem solving, team building, customer service and improved self-confidence.

Lorna Quigley, adi Group HR and CSR Manager, explains;

"As part of our commitment to investing in our staff and particularly our Apprentice Academy, volunteering events such as Give & Gain Day provide our Apprentices with an exciting platform to further develop their skills.

This year our Give & Gain Day activity has been coordinated by our Business Apprentice, Jessica Horton who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to project manage and prepare for the event.

We are proud to be part of Give & Gain Day 2016 and look forward to lending a helping hand and making a difference to one of the regions best loved attractions."

Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community adds:

“Business are being increasingly strategic about volunteering as a way to not only make a difference but also to build skills and gain insight about their communities. Doing so will not only help attract the next generation of talent, but it will also create communities that are better places to live, work and do business.”
