A Kings Norton-based engineering group celebrates 25 years in business and a successful formula that has seen it quadruple in size since 2005, both in turnover and number of employees.

adi Group was founded in 12th June 1990 by Alan Lusty as a single business offering; adi Electrical. Today adi is a multi-disciplined engineering Group, comprising 16 specialist service Companies and is completely self-funded and self-invested.

Located in King’s Norton business park and employing over 450 people with a 2014 turnover of £64m, the group is on track to increase to around 1,000 staff over the next 5 years and has equally strong ambitions for the next quarter of a century as CEO Alan Lusty explains:

“adi Group has played a crucial role in delivering regional growth. Our employee count has increased from 127 in 2005 to nearly 460 in 2015. In addition to this, we have significantly increased our investments in infrastructure within the Birmingham area by investing over £1m in our new offices and manufacturing facility at our Kings Norton base

“Whilst we are very proud to have employed a significant proportion of our staff from within the Midlands area, we have also grown substantially elsewhere in the UK and Ireland, resulting in a total of 12 operational locations.

“We are marking our 25th anniversary with a group-wide staff conference, bringing all 450 of our people together from our head office and eleven other regional and Irish sites. I can think of no better way to mark our 25th year than celebrating our employees' talents and energy in helping us reach such a successful milestone.”

The last 25 years has seen profound change in the engineering solutions sector and indeed across the region which has seen significant economic development, especially over the last decade.

The adi business offers total engineering solutions to UK manufacturing blue chips, with customer sectors spanning food and beverage, automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical and defence. It undertakes well in excess of 2,000 engineering projects a year, varying in size and value – many of which are for several multinationals headquartered in Birmingham.

Lusty continues: "In the coming quarter century, the role of multi-disciplined engineering will become even more important in driving growth, innovation, and productivity in industries such as food and beverage, automotive and aerospace.  Looking ahead, adi Group is positioned to continue to unlock growth across these sectors. As a Group, our aspirations are to continue to grow by offering further engineering services. Our 25 year history has been to self-invest in a new division or service every 18-24 months, and we look forward to continuing this strategy during our next 25 years.”

Aside from being significant supporters of the broader Birmingham economy in terms of job creation, adi Group is also an active investor in talent and CSR investment activity. In 2014, it created an apprenticeship academy and it has active links with local schools and colleges to encourage young people (especially female students) into the engineering sector.
