Josh Patton, 21 from Halesowen, in the West Midlands, is in the final year of an Electrical Engineering apprenticeship with multi-disciplinary engineering firm, adi Group, which has a base in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham.

What have you learnt during your Apprenticeship with adi Group?

Year One:
In my first year I achieved a level 2 in electrical installation at JTL College.

I spent the first year on one of adi’s client sites carrying out a range of hands on tasks and gaining new skills as I progressed. This included assisting electricians with installing ladder racks and cable trays and carrying out the installation of power panels.

By the time six months had passed I had started to develop a good understanding of construction layout drawings, risk assessments and method statements and customer relations. I also learnt how to become an MEWP Marshall and gained my IPAF licence.

Year Two:
In my second year I began my level 3 technical qualification in electrical engineering at JTL college and started to take on more technical work as I became more competent in my role.

This led to opportunities to assist lead electricians on the team with machine wiring and having an active role in devising the best ways to complete installations for clients. I also progressed to learning how to operate planet and machinery on sites safely and efficiently.

Year Three:
In my third year I completed my level 3 technical qualification in electrical Installation at JTL college.
In my third year at adi Group I continued to work on site with my role progressing to producing lighting layouts for vehicle inspection booths and dealing with customer requirements.

Part of my role also saw me deliver tool box talks to colleagues to help us keep health and safety at the forefront of all work we undertake on site and to understand and properly assess risks prior to working.

My third year experiences really helped improve my confidence in speaking with customers directly and gave me the skills to understand project management and the different elements that go into the projects we undertake.

What’s next for you once you complete your Apprenticeship at adi Group?

With just 6 months remaining I would love the opportunity to be offered a full time job and repay adi Group for the time, effort and faith they have placed in me. I would like to be offered the chance to become a site foreman as I feel the skills I have learnt with adi Group on my Apprenticeship would equip me perfectly for this role.

Over time, I hope to progress to managing the day-to-day running of large projects for adi Group and help to design technical drawings. I also want to continue to build my skillset with further technical qualifications.
